A photo gallery depicting ODYSSEY Media Group Managing Editor Peter Atchley’s four years in the program is shown. While objective writing was challenging for Atchely, he was resilient and blossomed as a journalist. “I put in buckets of sweat and pounds of effort to create impactful work and meaningful connections with the people around me. It was an uphill battle that I fought day in and day out throughout my freshman, sophomore and junior years,” Atchley wrote. Photos from the ODYSSEY archives

Managing Editor Peter Atchley reflects on the effort he has put in to become a better ODYSSEY staff member.
ODYSSEY was never very easy for me.
I cared so much about the people and the soft skills that I pushed myself to grow and mature rapidly. Although I was becoming more efficient, I still had a lot to learn.
At first, objective writing didn’t come naturally, with my writing leaning more flowery and overexplained. Photography wasn’t my strongest suit, with my pictures being awkward and posed. Editing didn’t click for me, as my eye was unable to catch the big issues.
Still, I put in buckets of sweat and pounds of effort to create impactful work and meaningful connections with the people around me. It was an uphill battle that I fought day in and day out throughout my freshman, sophomore and junior years.
The only way I survived that battle was pure hard work and optimism, which on some days was harder than others, but still I pushed myself
The only way I survived that battle was pure hard work and optimism, which on some days was harder than others, but still I pushed myself. By my senior year, things have changed:, I am truly a different person than I was four years ago. I am confident, organized, productive and a fully realized young adult.
ODYSSEY was never very easy for me. But I have always tried to become better.
