“The Toys That Made Us” is an entertaining look back into how the world got the popular toys it loves today.
As the decade comes to a close, Netflix’s third season of “The Toys That Made Us,” released on Nov. 15, gives viewers the perfect amount of nostalgia about their childhood.
The first season of “The Toys That Made Us” airedin Dec. 2017 with second season premiering in 2018. Fans will get to enjoy even better episodes in season three, which covers the toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, My Little Pony and Legends of Professional Wrestling figures.
The directors Tom Stern and Brian Volk-Weiss created a masterpiece of fun and lightheartedness while also documenting history. The seasons come with four episodes with each episode averaging 45 minutes. The documentary uses interviews and comedic clips to tell the story of various toys.
Audience members will get to see clips of poor quality old commercials, brainstorm sketches and interviews with behind-the-toy creators and fans of the toy.
First, viewers meet the original creators of the toys. They will talk about how the idea for the toy came about, then the documentary moves through the trials and tribulations that got the toy to be successful, usually ending the episode with an emotional but hopeful moment.
The documentary often cuts between clips of footage and interviews, and while it might be jarring at first, it quickly becomes part of the storytelling.
In the third episode os season three, which is on My Little Pony, the audience meets a brony, an adult male fan of the toys and show, “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic”. It included clips of brony meetups and the reactions of the My Little Pony creators, showing just how out of the box this documentary will go.
None of the episodes are tied together in a connected plot, allowing the audience to pick episodes they personally care about. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Barbie? My Little Pony or Star Wars? One or both, each episode is intriguing in its own way.
Each episode will bring nostalgia to those who had these toys when they were young. As another decade comes to a close, this series is a perfect flashback sure to bring good feelings.
Teenagers, young adults and their parents will all enjoy “The Toys That Made Us,” because no matter how old one gets, they will always enjoy embracing their inner child.
