“We was tryna move the ball a lot. We was trying to make sure everybody got a perfect shot, we wasn’t trying to rush anything too much,” CCHS senior and varsity basketball player Mikaylyn Glover said.

The second quarter ended with CCHS in the lead 26-20. Starting the third quarter, the Patriots and the Lady Glads were neck and neck until HHS inched ahead, making the score 46-43 going into the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t play very well third quarter. We didn’t close out on the shooters and we knew who they were and who they counted on we just didn’t do a very good job of that,” CCHS girls varsity coach Carla Johnson said.

The Heritage varsity girls stayed coordinated and collected throughout the final stretch and won the game 64-55.

“Overall, I know this was a loss tonight but we have improved compared to other years. We’re getting more players confident in having the ball and being able to be productive in our offense.” Johnson said. “At this point, you go back and it’s a teaching point, we learn from it and work on it in practice and hopefully next game we’ll do a better job.”

Varsity boys took the court next. During the first quarter, the Gladiators quickly took the lead 20-13. The second quarter was very fast-paced, with CCHS and HHS consistently one-upping each other but the Gladiators managed to take the lead 33-32 going into halftime.

“We execute on the turnovers, got some good rebounds, we just played as a team.”

“We execute on the turnovers, got some good rebounds, we just played as a team,” CCHS senior and varsity basketball player Josh Smith said.

The third quarter was similar to the first two quarters, fast-paced and neither team taking the lead. The scores stayed very close until the Gladiators pulled ahead 61-52. The Gladiators stayed ahead the entirety of the fourth quarter ending the game 86-82 Gladiators.

“We played together, this team–we were beaten last week by 20 and we made a comeback. This time we stayed together and we persevered,” CCHS head boys basketball coach Andre McIntyre said.
