Life’s Better on Saturn
ODYSSEY Media Group Outreach and Alumni Coordinator Gillian Williams reflects on her time as a member of the ODYSSEY Media Group.
I had never heard of ODYSSEY fresh out of middle school, especially coming from BHL. I got my first glimpse of Room 231 in my sophomore year.
People from ODYSSEY kept coming to Ms. Jennifer Tesler’s room looking for someone to interview for stories. Each time, Ms. Tesler would volunteer me to be interviewed.
After those times, she urged me to apply for the program, so I did. I got in, which felt good but very nerve-wracking. I had not the first bit of knowledge on journalism besides my ambitions to be a meteorologist when I was two.
Little did I know, it was going to be a long year. Although my time wasn’t the easiest, look at me now. I made it through two years in the program with many helping hands along the way. I am eternally grateful to those people.

Even though I won’t be becoming a meteorologist, I can still use those skills for the betterment of my future career. I also want to shout out my partners in crime: Merren Hines, Jay Braswell and Peter Atchley. I couldn’t have done this without y’all.
But, as SZA said, life’s better on Saturn and this was my Saturn.
