Attendees at the April 3 Clarke Central High School Parent Teacher Student Organization meeting sit in the CCHS Media Center. The meeting drew several eighth grade students and their parents to learn more about clubs offered at CCHS. “We asked (CCHS) student athletes and students in clubs to come so rising eighth graders can get a well-rounded view of what is offered here,” PTSO board member Kisha Bailey said. “There are a lot of choices available and we wanted to capture that.”
The Clarke Central High School Parent Teacher Student Organization held a meeting on April 3 to expose rising ninth grade students to opportunities at CCHS.
On April 3, the Clarke Central High School Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) held their final meeting of the year.
“The goal of this meeting was to wrap up the business we had for the year and to welcome the rising freshmen and their families and give them a snapshot of everything Central has to offer,” PTSO board member and CCHS parent Kisha Bailey said.
Students from clubs and activities such as band, Mock Trial, Black Culture Club and wrestling encouraged rising ninth graders to consider joining extracurricular activities once at CCHS.
“I came to the meeting because my band director asked me to represent the band. I answered parent questions and explained what we do in concert and marching band,” CCHS sophomore Lucy Gibson said. “It’s very informational because a lot of eighth graders may not know that some of these clubs exist.”
The aim was to draw rising ninth grade students and their families to learn more about the extracurricular opportunities offered at CCHS. According to Clarke Middle School eighth grader Teresa McHugh, the event was beneficial.
“I’m considering joining some of these clubs so I came because I thought it would be good to learn more,” McHugh said. “I needed to know the times and days (the clubs) were meeting, so that was helpful.”
Not only did the meeting expose parents and students to CCHS clubs, but the PTSO also conducted end-of-year business.
“Apart from welcoming the families in, we had the business part of the meeting where we voted on different things that need funding such as the senior night of reflection, Glads Rise Up, things like that,” Bailey said. “We also did an overview of the fundraisers and events the PTSO has done this year.”
For eighth grade parent Roxanne McHugh, the meeting was a valuable insight into CCHS.
“I wish more people were able to come to (the meeting) because it was very helpful to know what clubs are active. And the PTSO’s overview of their year was very helpful because this is the only (meeting) I’ve been to so I feel like I have a better idea of how this all works.”
