Clarke Central High School upperclassmen apply for scholarships as the first semester of the 2016-17 school year comes to an end.
As second semester begins, deadlines for scholarships are approaching. In the Clarke Central High School announcements, CCHS college advisor Alyssa Yuhouse shares available local scholarships for CCHS seniors.
“I am part of the Georgia College Advising Corps, which is a program through (University of Georgia),” Yuhouse said. “There is a group of us in the metro-Atlanta area and we all share resources and everything just to help all students.”
Applying for scholarships is optional but according to Yuhouse there are a lot of advantages for seniors who do apply and and are awarded scholarships.
“If you just get a bunch of scholarships you don’t have to worry about loans later on,” Yuhouse said. “Also, you might not have to get a part time job while you’re at school and you could just focus on school if you get enough scholarships, because you don’t have to worry about money. And that’s such a huge factor when you go to college.”
When applying for scholarships, Yuhouse said there may be a certain criteria the student would have to meet to be eligible.
“Some scholarships are just for people that are left-handed; some scholarships are just for boys or just for girls,” Yuhouse said. “(For) some you have to have a certain GPA, some you might have to have test scores, and some you might have to have a recommendation.”
Senior Chris Magyar has not talked to the CCHS college advisor due to being busy with extracurricular activities, but advises other seniors to.
“I do believe scholarships are important, as they are one of the ways to assist people who need these scholarships to get through college, which is very important for the enrichment of learning and advancement of narrowed learning for specialization,” Magyar said. “The only specific one I know about is the ROTC scholarship.”
Senior Charis Stafford hasn’t applied for any scholarships as of now but says he will start soon.
“Talk to our college advisor if you don’t know where to start,” Stafford said. “I’ve met with our college advisor multiple times and there are scholarships for almost everything.”
Along with ROTC, Avantis “Young Women’s Achievement”, HOPE Scholarship, Look Twice to Save a Life, the Tree Center Scholarship and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority are also scholarships that are available.
“Sometimes it will take forever to just find one that you fit all the criteria for but it’ll be worth it,” Yuhouse said. “So just be patient and start early.”
