From Bud to Bloom
Diversity and Representation Editor and Journalism I Facilitator Samaya Ellis reflects on her time in the ODYSSEY Media Group.
My first day of high school, walking into Rroom 231, I had no idea what to expect. I walked into class late as a lost freshman in a three-story building. I was greeted with three upperclassmen who would be serving as Journalism I Facilitators and a cluster of freshmen Journalism I students sitting in a circle.
My freshman and sophomore years in ODYSSEY were rough. I didn’t fully understand journalism or the program. During my junior year, I served as a Journalism I Facilitator, mentoring and guiding the next generation of Production staffers. My senior year was truly my turning point.
For once, I felt like I was a part of something larger than myself. I grew from the position of a Journalism I Facilitator to the Diversity Representation Editor to a member of the OMG Cabinet.

I am forever grateful for the friendships and memories that were kindled along the ride. The leadership growth and tangible skills I have learned throughout my time as a student journalist are things I will take with me beyond high school and Room 231.
