Head baseball coach Trey Henson announced his resignation to the team on June 19.
Returning members of the Gladiator baseball team were called to a meeting in the Gladiator baseball dugout on June 19 at 12:30 PM, as Clarke Central High School’s head baseball coach Trey Henson announced his resignation to players.
“I hate that I won’t be able to play for Henson my senior year since I’ve been playing for him my entire high school career,” rising senior varsity baseball player Ben Gillespie said. “I think we will continue to play the same and we are going to just act like nothing changed.”
Henson has accepted the head baseball and Assistant Athletic Director position at the Riverwood International Charter School in Sandy Springs, Ga, a Region 6-AAAAA school.
“We don’t know who are new coach is, but I hope it’s is a coach that we are all familiar with, so we can keep our program moving in the same direction,” Gillespie said.
In an email to parents and players after the meeting, Henson wrote, “I have been assured that the position will be filled with a qualified candidate. So guys, keep moving forward.”
CCHS English department teacher Ginger Lehmann’s son, Evan, is a rising junior on the team. While she sees potential challenges, Lehmann is optimistic about a renewed program.
“It’s always difficult when a coach leaves because players get used to one person’s coaching style and expectations, but I think with 7 seniors leaving the team this past spring, it seems like a good time to start rebuilding the team and try some new strategies,” Lehmann said.
During his last year as the head baseball coach for CCHS, Henson and the team ended the season with an overall record of 10-19 and a region 8-AAAAA record of 4-8.
“For right now, I’m not sure what the move is on who is going to lead us next year but I’m looking forward to it,” rising senior varsity baseball player Tee White said. “I wish (Henson) the best in his future.”
