Senior English classes focus on improving writing skill to prepare for students’ future outside of high school.
Writing is a priority for senior English students at Clarke Central High School according to English department co-chair Erin Cawthon. She says they will be focusing on writing more than ever before.
“Whatever it is they decide to do after they leave here, you are going to have to be able to read and write to be able to communicate effectively,” Cawthon said.
In fact, some seniors at CCHS have been working on their application essays in their literature classes. Students that were not working on their college essays practiced writing them using past application prompts.
“Practicing writing makes you a better writer,” Cawthon said. “For those (students) that used actual essay topics from their college applications, they wrote their college application essay. That saves them time and plus, (working on their essays in class) gives them a chance to get feedback on it and make revisions and things like that before they actually have to submit it.”
Throughout the year, fourth year students will focus on writing skills in their English class regardless of whether or not students choose to apply to college. Senior Adilene Padilla is excited about how this year will develop her writing ability.
“I’m looking forward to writing really good essays that I can actually use on scholarship essays or essays to enter colleges,” Padilla said.
