2009 CCHS alumna Amber Wallin and her husband Benjamin Wallin showed the first screening of their movie “We’re Pregnant: And Other Lies” on April 30.
When an audience member sits down to watch “We’re Pregnant: And Other Lies,” they will almost immediately hear references to slang terms for female anatomy. However, viewers are treated to a personal and uplifting story in the heart-warming film, along with the smell of fresh popcorn, blue walls and mocktails.
The creators, Clarke Central High School Class of 2009 Alumna Amber Wallin and her husband Benjamin Wallin premiered their first screening at local movie theater Ciné on April 30. Taking place in 2021 and 2022, the film tells the story of the Wallins’ relationship, pregnancy and the birth of their first child, Wilde Lynn Wallin.
The film builds off of the introduction of Amber Wallin’s and Ben Wallin’s characteristics. Amber is portrayed as a funny social butterfly and someone who lights up a room. Meanwhile, Ben is portrayed as a nerdy, emotionally in-touch, and supportively loving person. Viewers see the highs and lows of the Wallins’ relationship and how they connect with wider society. While the storyline is not very dramatic, it’s very heartwarming and human.

Throughout “We’re Pregnant: And Other Lies,” there is an underlying theme of growth and learning through hardship. Whether buying maternity clothes, having a COVID-19-safe baby shower or going through a health scare when giving birth, every plot point leads to the Wallins’ growth as people and their development through these tumultuous events.

The film not only showcases often-untold sides of pregnancy, but also showcases how Amber Wallin’s intersectionality of being pregnant, Black and a woman plays into the family’s worries and decisions. For instance, from the beginning of the film, the Wallins acknowledge their experiences as an interracial couple.
Those who are sensitive to profanity or uncomfortable with discussions and depictions of birth should be cautious when viewing this film. However, this emotionally driven movie gives those who watch a chance to see a beautiful family within a tear-jerking narrative.
