Clarke Central High School’s varsity baseball team will host Monroe Area High School on Feb. 26.
The Clarke Central High School varsity baseball team will play Monroe Area High School at home on Feb. 26, going into the game 1-2.
CCHS head varsity baseball coach Adam Osborne believes that the team has upped their chances against MAHS due to improvements in the program.
“We’ve added more coaches, in terms of specialization. We’ve added coaches that were half time last year (and) they’re full time now– brought them on staff and everything,” Osborne said. “We haven’t taken a whole lot of time off, you know, we’re not having (to) knock a whole lot of rust off.”
CCHS varsity baseball player Nick Mauldin, a senior, agrees with Osborne that the team has put in the work towards being successful against MAHS this season, despite having lost both games against them last season.
“Compared to the last couple of seasons, we did a lot more off-season work (to prepare). So we did a lot more workouts (and) throwing programs,” Mauldin said. “I (have) a goal to hit 85 (miles an hour) as a pitcher this season. I hit 82, so hopefully I’ll get it up to 85.”
CCHS assistant varsity coach Nick Wegmann thinks that the team is at a strong point right now to take on competitors.
“We started last year, I think, (with) three freshmen and a handful of sophomores. So I’m really excited for the second year, seeing what those guys are going to do,” Wegmann said. “We also have three or four guys that have been in the program for about probably six or seven years at this point, (starting) back (in) middle school.”
