The ODYSSEY Media Group’s literary-art magazine, the iliad, produced their 2016-17 edition this past May. With the new school year underway, the publication celebrates its work and contributors from the most recent issue.
A crowd of 40 gathered on Sept. 7 for a reading and celebration of Entropy, the 2016-17 issue of the ODYSSEY Media Group’s literary-art magazine, the iliad.
The event, titled the iliad/IB Learner Creative Writing Celebration, took place in the Clarke Central High School Media Center with the goal of highlighting the artistic and creative endeavors of CCHS students, as well as enjoying a lunch sponsored by Marti’s at Midday.
“I think the importance of the Entropy celebration was just to thank as well as praise all of the students who contributed, which I think in years past has been kind of lost since we publish the magazine in May and sometimes even after school has already let out,” Editor-in-Chief of the iliad Violet Merritt said.
The goal of the iliad literary-art magazine is to give an outlet for students to voice their thoughts through art and creative writing.
“iliad is such an amazing opportunity to express myself and I wish I had known about this platform way earlier. I loved it,” senior and contributor to the iliad Luis Garcia said.
The event allowed the contributors to read their creative writing aloud and show their art to their family and peers, as well as let them explain their thought process and the meaning behind their work.
“I’m really glad I got to read my story to everyone. It’s not something I get to do often and it made it feel important and more significant that not only did I get to read it front of a crowd of my family and peers but that the story got to be told to all these people. The act of verbally retelling it with my own spin meant a lot to me,” Garcia said.
The members of the iliad will host their meetings in room 231 to begin work on the 2017-18 iliad publication.
“Having an event where contributors can invite their guests and stand up and talk a little about their piece allows them a platform to share like ‘Hey, I wrote this,’ or ‘I drew this and it was published in the iliad,’” Merritt said. “I also hope that it encourages them to submit more of their art this year, and talk to their friends about it–spread the word that we are here and we want to be a place where everyone feels comfortable sharing their art.”
