The DC cinematic universe experienced another misfire with “Suicide Squad”. The film’s cut footage, awful dialogue and lack of plot made the movie not worth a shot.
After Batman vs. Superman (2016) took a critical beating for its serious tone, DC hoped to lighten the mood for its audience with “Suicide Squad”. The movie follows a group of supervillains who are used as patsies for a government black ops operation.
“Suicide Squad’s” trailers sold it as a fast-paced action movie with boundless energy, witty dialogue and vibrant energy.
The biggest problem with the movie is its script, which hops from one meaningless point to another as it stumbles around for a two hour run time. The actors portray their characters very well and salvage what otherwise would have been an unwatchable film. Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith) and Joker (Jared Leto) steal the show. Although the Joker only appears in a handful of scenes throughout the movie, he demands the audience’s attention with his unpredictable actions.
The audience can see the potential for greatness throughout the movie, only hindered by groan inducing dialogue, the non-existent plot and very little character development for the supporting cast. The movie shoots for a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe, but is missing the heart and soul that made Guardians so entertaining.
For fans of the characters and those who were enticed by the trailers, “Suicide Squad” drops the ball. It fails to deliver on the exciting moments from the trailer, given their noticeable absence in the film. Hopefully, a future film will be able to deliver a script worthy of the actors’ within the movie.
