On Feb. 5, author Gavriel Savit visited the Clarke Central High School Media Center through a partnership with Avid Bookshop for a book reading, Q&A and book signing.
First-time author and long-time performer Gavriel Savit visited Clarke Central High School on Feb. 5 while on tour for his newly released book, “Anna and the Swallow Man”, which Savit describes as “a fairy tale that takes place in Poland in the 1930s and 40s about the magical uncertainty of war and childhood.” The library hosted the event in conjunction with the local Avid Bookstore.
“I thought it went really well,” Weaver said. “I was very excited to use our new space and host an event like this where some kids got exposed to an author that they might not know otherwise.”
Athens is only one of the stops on Savit’s tour, which includes cities such as Phoenix, San Francisco and Boston. Savit enjoyed his experience with the students at CCHS, as well as his time spent in Athens.
“It’s lovely. I really like this town,” Savit said. “(The visit) was really great. I had a lot of fun. There were good questions. It’s fun to see the new space. I think I’m the third event here in the space and so I’m proud of that.”
Junior Lauryn Waters attended the event and was one of the many students who received a free copy of “Anna and the Swallow Man”. She believes that author visits are crucial in bridging the gap between writers and readers.
“I really like how he incorporated like the different points of view and he took his ideas about the book deeper,” Waters said. “(Visits are) good because it makes the book and the author’s perspective more identifiable and more relatable to the students because you actually see, ‘Ok, this is a real person’ and why they wrote about this thing instead of just a random book.”
