Clarke Central High School has after school tutoring, as well as Saturday school, to help students. Clarke Central High School’s after school program has been remodeled this year and has seen a pick up in participation.
With the upcoming close of fall semester, after school tutoring is in full swing at Clarke Central High School. The program has been remodeled as English department teacher Zachary Thrower has taken over the program and revised it.
“We want to see kids excited about the fact that going to tutoring produces results not only for their grades, but it’s building relationships with teachers,” Thrower said.
Math, science, English and social studies departments have specific teachers who stay after school for tutoring and remediation. The sessions are held on Monday and Thursday every week unless noted otherwise. Snacks and bus ride home after are provided for those who attend.
During these after school sessions, students have the ability to get tutoring help from peers and from teachers as well as remediate and complete makeup work or get ahead.
“After school tutoring is very helpful,” sophomore Adoria Jones said. “It gives me a better understanding on material I don’t know and has helped improve my grades drastically.”
Teachers who provide after school tutoring include science department teacher Kimberlyn Jackson, math department teacher John Walker, English department teacher Brian Ash and many others.
Thrower is optimistic about the program and has set goals for student attendance.
“We want to see eight to 15 kids in every session every day,” Thrower said.
