For the 2015 football Season, varsity and junior varsity coach Aaron Cavin discusses his thoughts on the new players and what they bring to the team.
Owen Churchwell: What is your job on the football team?
Aaron Cavin: I am the varsity receivers coach and the head JV coach.
OC: What do you teach?
AC: I teach geometry support and agriculture.
OC: How do you feel like the younger guys are doing stepping up to taking varsity roles in the team?
AC: We are really excited about our ninth grade players and some of our tenth grade players. They worked out hard this summer, they are coachable, they are doing the little things right, they are excited about playing, they are a team, there is not a lot of arrogance and they seem to be a pretty cohesive group. The key is to get their grades right and they don’t start to develop bad habits as they start to get older which a lot of kids do. We really got to stay on them, but we are really excited about them.
OC: Do you think that the younger guys are working hard as a whole?
AC: Yeah, in general, those ninth kids because they are fresh and their brand new and they are excited and they’re eager. I feel like they have been doing a great job and we expect to continue to see that.
OC: How do you work to keep that momentum in the younger group?
AC: I can only speak for myself, but I know from me personally, I am checking their grades almost everyday, emailing and contacting parents so that none of them fall behind academically. Behaviorally, if we have an issue in the classroom we are going to deal with it that day. We will suspend kids or discipline them as needed, so that they realize that football is just a small part of being a great citizen in our community. So if they are not doing well in the classroom, then we are not going to give them the opportunity until they learn to do right. I think that by doing that and instilling discipline that’s going to keep the kids excited and eager to be a team and to perform better.
