Terrance Fleming, former Cedar Shoals basketball player, recently accepted the JV coach and varsity assistant coach position at Clarke Central High School. Fleming played college basketball all across the country. He played at Cleveland State, Coffeyville in Kansas, and Idaho State during his career.
“I love it. Just seeing the world and a new atmosphere,” Fleming said.
As a coach, Fleming loves to give advice to his players about basketball as well as their personal lives.
“Off the court, he’s a good role model, he wants the kids to have do good in school such as good grades, and stay out of trouble on and off the court,” junior Rayshawn McCall said.
Fleming started coaching for the CCHS freshman team in the 2013-2014 season, and has since been promoted to JV head coach and the varsity assistant.
“The aspect of him being the assistant coach for varsity team is that I make sure my coaches have all on the floor. I make sure my coaches point out to me, so they are very valuable. You have coaches that see the game, and bring knowledge to the game,” varsity head coach Andre McIntyre said.
“My goal is to get the players to the varsity level. I like to see progression. I had a guy that can’t dribble, but now that can dribble such as crossovers, between the legs and behind the back,” Fleming said.
One of Fleming’s primary goals is to teach players about the world through basketball.
“I’m trying to get a group of young men ready for life because once you leave these halls, it happens that fast. You gotta crawl before you can walk,” Fleming said
Fleming wants his players to be well-rounded on the basketball court as well as in the classroom.
“I try to teach basketball the way I try to teach life. You got competition,” Fleming said. “When you have a interview, somebody going to try interview (for) that same job. Life is just competition.”
