Clarke Central High School students will join more than 2 million others across the country to cross social and racial boundaries on Tuesday Oct. 18, as part of the 10th annual Mix It Up at Lunch Day. This event designed to foster respect and understanding in schools and encourages students to sit with someone new in the cafeteria for just one day.
During Glad Time on Tuesday, advisers will distribute one playing card to each student and instruct them that they’ll be invited to sit in the cafeteria according to their card suit.
Special decorations will be placed on lunchroom tables to designate the four seating areas and conversation starters.
Members of several CCHS Clubs will be on hand to help students find their seats and to encourage conversation and Mixing It Up. Student club volunteers will work one lunch period and then eat lunch during their usual time.
Students aren’t forced to give up their usual seat, but are invited to participate and, just for a day, make an effort to talk to a person they’ve never talked to before and cross social group barriers.
More than 5,000 schools are expected to participate in this year’s Mix It Up at Lunch Day, which is sponsored by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project.
