Being a high school student-athlete is one thing, but it is another thing to be a college recruit.
Clarke Central High School sophomore free safety An’zavion “Zay” Brown is a college prospect and junior running back JaQua Daniels is a college recruit. Both play on
Clarke Central High School’s varsity football team. The University of Georgia has recruited Daniels and shown interest in Brown.
“As of right now, (colleges) can’t really talk to me (because) I’m a sophomore,” Brown said. “But I’ll tell JaQua that I’m coming to a game, he’ll tell (the coaches) and then they’ll expect me, and I just talk to them in person.”
Daniels, however, has been recruited by multiple colleges such as Florida State University, University of Florida and Clemson University to play football.
Even though football is how he will look at colleges initially, Brown is also interested in looking at the education programs of each university.
“If they’ve got (something) that I can major in, then it’s a big step (to choosing the right college),” Brown said.
Brown hopes to find the right college and that committing will be in his near future.
“I think when it comes time when I want to commit, I’ll talk it over with my family and Coach Self and want to see how I fit in before I commit anywhere. I’m thinking about being committed either in the middle of next season, so I already know (and) have my mind set on the school,” Brown said.
Daniels is also trying to figure out what college to commit to.
“You want to find a school where you know that you can keep your grades up and the football program and how good it is,” Daniels said.
Head varsity football coach Ahren Self believes in both students’ abilities to play at a collegiate level.
“They’re improving a lot, and they’re only going to keep getting better and better,” Self said.
