Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, debuted her new drama, How to Get Away with Murder, on Sept. 25. on ABC.
The pilot starts in the “present” where four law students are debating where to move a body. Yes, a dead body, and it seems likely they all played a part in the murder.
The flashback part of the episode follows those four law students, among others, who aim to work in defense attorney Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) firm. Keating, who besides practicing law, also teaches and annually picks five students to work with her at her firm.
Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch) is a law student best characterized as the underdog. Although completely out of his league, he becomes one of the five students selected to work for Keating. The reasoning behind her choice is between impressing her with his theory of defense for a client and Wes catching her cheat on her husband.
Alongside Enoch’s character, Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King), Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee), Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) and Asher Millstone (Matt McGorry) also join Keating’s law firm.
Unfortunately, viewers have yet to learn much about these characters except for the fact Connor and Michaela have no problem breaking some laws to win over Keating and all the students are brown-nosing and generally unlikable.
Despite characters being hard to sympathize with, there is a lot that will keep viewers hooked on the show like how Wes’ apartment neighbor, Rebecca, has something to do with a murder of a college student and has an intense relationship with the victim’s boyfriend/possible murderer. The murdered girl was also the student of Keating’s husband.
The show tackled many drama-filled storylines and it was almost overwhelming for the viewer. Although there is little developments of characters so far, the intense show keeps viewers entertained.
The show became captivating as soon as it started because of the mystery of who the dead body was and the showstopping Viola Davis, who is a shining star in the show. Although the mystery of the body could’ve perhaps extended for an episode on two, it is revealed by the end of the episode.
With its killer plot and intriguing characters How to Get Away with Murder is sure to keep viewers on their toes.
