ODYSSEY Media Group staffers are in 6th Place in the National Scholastic Press Association’s Clips & Clicks Sweepstakes, which recognizes excellence in student journalism.
The National Scholastic Press Association announced its winners for the Clips & Clicks contest for the fall 2022 semester. Additionally, student media outlets were recognized for their placement in the Clips & Clicks Sweepstakes.
The competition, which is open to all NSPA members, commends work from student journalists produced during the school year. The fall-semester winners spotlighted content produced from May 28-Dec. 8 2022.
According to NSPA, there were nearly 635 submissions in the fall competition. The judges included student media advisers, collegiate professors, and professional journalists.
“The judges consistently said they were very impressed with the quality of the entries submitted,” NSPA Associate Director Gary Lundgren said.
Approximately 17 percent of those entered (105) were commended. The number of winners in each category was determined by the judges based on the quality and quantity of the entries.
When calculating Sweepstakes, the following points are assigned:
First Place: 10
Second Place: 9
Third Place: 8
Fourth Place: 7
Fifth Place: 6
Honorable Mention: 5
Clarke Central High School, which had nine submissions awarded, is now in sixth place in the Sweepstakes. With such a young staff, ODYSSEY Media Group Editor-in-Chief Molly Harwell was pleased to see the progress her team has made after the graduation of 11 OMG staff members at the end of the 2021-22 academic year.
“I am so incredibly proud of our staff. This year has been somewhat of a rebuilding year for us after the seniors graduated,” Harwell said. “There have been a lot of ups and downs, but our staff has worked so hard and has made so much progress. I am so proud of how far they’ve come.”
For OMG adviser David Ragsdale, the commendations are a sign of things to come.
“It’s rewarding to see the kids hitting their strides. They are continuing to produce quality work, work worthy of commendation, but more importantly, they are telling the stories of their community,” Ragsdale said.
The 2023 spring-semester competition is open to content published from Dec. 9, 2022-May 3, 2023. The BetterBNC submission site opens Feb. 17, with a contest deadline of May 3.
