Taco Bell’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato is shown. The dissatisfying treat, released on Sept. 3, is available through online purchase for rewards members, should they choose to make this mistake. “The tropical lime flavor that Taco Bell claims the gelato has is very subtle. Rather, the gelato just tastes like sweet cream with a hint of fruitiness that only strikes the palate at the end,” Social Media Coordinator Liya Taylor wrote. “Overall, Taco Bell’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato is a let down for those expecting a vibrant lime flavor and gelato texture.” Photo fair use of Taco Bell
On Sept. 3, Taco Bell’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato made its nationwide debut exclusively for rewards members via the Taco Bell app. The treat appears full of flavor, but leaves customers unsatisfied.
Taco Bell’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast, a tropical lime-flavored soft drink released in 2004, has now taken shape in gelato form – a disappointing move.
The Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato dropped on Sept. 3 at participating U.S stores and is only available for online order through the Taco Bell app for those with a rewards membership. The treat comes in one size and is a whopping $4.99 for a portion smaller than the palm of one’s hand.
At first glance, the gelato is vibrant. It has an electric teal color, just like the high-selling original Mountain Dew Baja Blast soft-drink. However, this colorful look proves deceiving after a single bite.

An Instagram post from Taco Bell showcasing the chain’s new Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato, released Sept. 3, is shown. While the treat’s texture didn’t feel like that of gelato, its icy texture was enjoyable. “Despite not having the assumed gelato feel, the treat’s sherbert-like texture is quite pleasant, with it’s lighter and more icy making the tiny hint of lime noticeable. This works in the treats favor despite not living up to the expected gelato texture,” Social Media Coordinator Liya Taylor wrote. Instagram post fair use of Taco Bell
The tropical lime flavor that Taco Bell claims the gelato has is very subtle. Rather, the gelato just tastes like sweet cream with a hint of fruitiness that only strikes the palate at the end. The sweetness overpowers the subtle lime flavor and leaves customers with an unpleasant sugary taste.
In addition, when one thinks of gelato, the rich, creamy, italian ice cream comes to mind. But, Taco Bell’s Baja Blast “Gelato” has much more of a sherbert texture, feeling more ice-like than creamy.
“The tropical lime flavor that Taco Bell claims the gelato has is very subtle. Rather, the gelato just tastes like sweet cream with a hint of fruitiness that only strikes the palate at the end.”
Despite not having the classic gelato feel, the treat’s texture is nonetheless quite pleasant, with its lighter and icier qualities making the tiny hint of lime noticeable.
Overall, Taco Bell’s Mountain Dew Baja Blast Gelato is a let down for those expecting a vibrant lime flavor and gelato texture. Although, according to Taco Bell, the treat is only available for a limited time, the gelato’s small size, high price and disappointing flavor make it one to skip out on.
