Menu Editor Audrey Enghauser reflects on her passion for making collages and how the art form has given her a creative escape from the stressors in her everyday life.
Ever since I can remember, my mom and I spent long hours with magazines, scissors and glue on the living room floor. Since then, piecing together images and text into collages has become a part of my identity.
I start with a background — something captivating that establishes the collage’s color scheme. From there, I carefully select images that compliment one another: some bold and bright, others smaller, adding depth and complexity to the piece.
Flipping through my collection of old magazines, encyclopedias and books, I select excerpts of different moods, textures and styles that catch my eye. In the end, I have art that is cohesive and unique, reflecting a new meaning.
This art form is unlike anything else. Because of it, I have a lens through which to see content artfully, outside of its intended meaning. I can envision images in new ways, focusing on aspects that would otherwise go unnoticed.
It gives me a place to explore new ideas and be the most genuine version of myself.
With this on my mind, I am constantly stumbling on inspiration, sending me further into the creative perspective I seek.
It is my opportunity to escape into a world of paper and color, free from any distractions or stress from school. When I’m cutting, gluing, arranging or admiring, I am safe.
I am happiest when I can relax and make art, settling into my inner thoughts. It gives me a place to explore new ideas and be the most genuine version of myself.
My artistic style and intentions for collaging will evolve as my life changes in high school and college. However, I know that because of the fulfillment and enjoyment making collages has given me, I will continue to pursue this art form, pouring my creative energy into books and books worth of collages over the years.
