Alternative musician Alexander O’Connor, professionally known by his stage name Rex Orange County, released his latest album, “Pony”, on Oct. 25.
Best known for his bedroom soul sound and 2017 single “Best Friend”, British singer-songwriter Rex Orange County, also known as Alexander O’Connor, hit another home run with his third album “Pony”, which was released on Oct. 25.
Rex Orange County’s new album “Pony” stays true to O’Connor’s musical style by mixing his popular upbeat tone with slower-paced songs such as “Every Way” and “Pluto Projector“.
“Pony”, which is more of a musical narrative than a compilation of songs, is sure to appeal to teenagers through his relatable lyrics. The album discusses various topics from self-improvement to the concept of growing up.
In “Never Had The Balls”, O’Connor does not shy away from his fear of rejection in relationships with lyrics like, “Feel amazing and I’m on my way home / Yeah, I’m finally in the zone / I heard the word ‘goodbye’ and felt surprised / That I wasn’t even sad in the slightest.” He also showcases his more emotional side, singing, “I cry in front of you, and it’s very necessary, babe / I will care about you, in every way I can” in “Every Way.”
Musically and lyrically, the album is magnificently done. “Pony” utilizes various instruments such as the guitar, piano, xylophone and electronics to achieve O’Connor’s unique alternative yet, soul and jazz-inspired sound. Songs such as “10/10” and “Face to Face” will leave listeners singing along with the catchy, well-written lyrics.
The album contains 10 songs and is available on streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. It can also be purchased on iTunes for $9.99.
Although the album is on the shorter side, O’Connor’s personality shines through his lighthearted character and unique voice in the album. “Pony” is sure to impress fans and leave them eagerly waiting for his next release.
