The ODYSSEY Media Group Variety Staff continues their journey across the Classic City in search of the best tacos Athens has to offer.
Cali n Tito’s
Upon entering one of the two Cali N Tito’s locations in Athens, the 1427 S Lumpkin St. location, one is met with a unique combination of Latin culture. Located less than a mile from Clarke Central High School, Cali N Tito’s is a perfect location for students to have a quick bite to eat after school.
When looking at the menu, there is a variety of Latin cuisine to choose from. One of their most notable dishes is the street style tacos. Customers can choose from seven different types of tacos, ensuring that there’s something available for every customer.
The original street taco style is built perfectly, with crisp-fried corn tortillas filled with seasoned ground beef, cheese, lettuce, and sometimes tomato, onion, salsa, sour cream, and avocado or guacamole, however, the taste and look of the tacos are not quite the same.
Customers have the selection of beef, steak, chicken, sausages, pork and fish. For those who are vegetarians, there is a veggie taco option, which is not as tasty. However, the meat tacos and the fish are a delicious bite after a long day.
The combination of the veggies, the tortilla and the meat is the perfect explosion of flavor, but in some cases, like the sausage taco, the spiciness doesn’t cater to everyone.
Cali N Tito’s prices go from $2.25, which is definitely affordable for high school-aged students. Unlike some Latin restaurants that provide cheap quality for a cheap price, Cali N Tito’s creates a good mix of quality food and low prices.
Overall Cali N Tito’s provides a great feeling for everyone who is trying to get a real Latin vibe, as well as, a cheap and delicious meal.
Sr. Sol 2
From the small garden in the entrance of the restaurant, to the traditional Mexican decorations on the outside patio, Sr. Sol 2 is an awesome place to experience Latin
Culture.
Located off Atlanta Highway, Sr. Sol 2 caters a
wide variety of authentic Mexican food. Being the second Sr. Sol location in Athens, long-time customers are well versed in the ve page menu.
Walking into Sr. Sol 2, guest will see the daily specials, while inside, there is a plethora of colorful paintings and Latin decorations placed around the store.
After being seated, guest are greeted with free chips and traditional Mexican style salsa as an appetizer. Guest can choose from 11 tacos such as chorizo (sausage), pescado (fish), pollo (chicken) and asada (steak). As for vegetarians, there is also a veggie option. All tacos are served with cilantro, onions and lime and range from $2.25 to 2.99.
Compared to most original street tacos, Sr. Sol’s tacos are spot on. The chorizo taco is lled with different seasonings and spices, but unfortunately, the tacos were drenched in oils, which caused them to be pretty messy. Luckily, the overall presentation of the dishes outweighed the mess.
Sr. Sol 2 has amazing customer service. Guest will never be forgotten about, and will never haveto ask for drink re lls because the servers are very persistent.
Overall, Sr. Sol 2 is a great place to nd authentic street-style tacos as well as other classical Mexican cuisine.
