Clarke Central High School seniors celebrated Decision Day on April 27 in Mell Auditorium.
Visuals coordinator Julie Alpaugh: What is Decision Day?
Clarke Central High School college adviser Alyssa Yuhouse: Decision Day is a model taken from National Signing day where athletes commit to school. Instead of just celebrating the athletes who have decided to pursue further education with athletics, we like to celebrate the whole senior class and where they are going to school and celebrate all the hard work they have done throughout their school career and especially senior year. It is just a fun celebration before graduation.
JA: How is CCHS celebrating decision day?
AY: This year we are doing it in Mell Auditorium during fifth period and it’s going to be more formal. Basically, the students will get on stage and we will say their names. We are having juniors announce them. There will also be a speaker, and a student will do a spoken-word, like a poem for us.
JA: Who all can attend Decision Day?
AY: I sent teachers a sign-up awhile ago. I have 400 seats for students to sit in, so I have almost 400 students signed up, but some are seniors.
JA: Who will be participating in Decision Day?
AY: Seniors that wanted to participate. It wasn’t mandatory. We also have a student that is going into the military.
JA: What is the importance of celebrating student’s post-high school decision?
AY: The importance is to have the student realize how much their hard work has meant and the decision to pursue higher education or the military is a big deal and is going to change the course of your life. It is something to be celebrated and we shouldn’t only celebrate athletes. We do have athletes to be participating, but we want students to be proud of the hard work they have done all year.
JA: What are your hopes for Decision Day?
AY: I hope the kids enjoy it, I am hoping for my first event it goes smoothly and just hope the kids have fun.
