The Clarke Central High School chamber orchestra will be performing at the Black History Month assembly, which will take place on Feb. 16 in Mell Auditorium.
Clarke Central High School’s Honors Chamber Strings orchestra will be performing during the Black History assembly on Feb. 16 in Mell Auditorium. The group plans to play Michael Jackson’s hit song, “Man In The Mirror”.
“We have not performed at this assembly in the past, so we are excited for this inaugural performance,” fine arts department teacher and orchestra director Eunice Kang said.
Kang is also the chamber group’s adviser, which is a program for orchestra students who want extra practice time and more opportunities to play in performances and concerts.
“This is my first year playing in honors strings, and I joined because I wanted to further my playing career,” violinist Taelor Threadgill, a CCHS senior, said.
According to Threadgill, the group’s practices have been devoted to preparing for their Black History Month assembly performance.
“I am in Honors Chamber Strings with eight other students,” Threadgill said. “In order to prepare for the performance, we have been practicing after school on Mondays.”
The Black History Month celebration will take place during third period on Friday, Feb. 16, and again after school at 6:30 p.m. In addition to the chamber group, the assembly will feature a performance from the step team, spoken word, skits and dances. There will also be a gallery walk of CCHS student artwork.
“(Playing for the Black History Month assembly) will be a great opportunity to perform for the students and staff for such an important event,” Kang said. “It is an honor for us to be able to showcase the talents of these students in celebration of Black History Month.”
Threadgill agrees and says that this performance is different than other ones throughout the year because of the meaning behind the occasion and song.
“We have been preparing “Man In The Mirror” by Michael Jackson for the performance,” Threadgill said. “This performance is different because it has more meaning behind it. This song, and celebration has the power to bring people of all backgrounds together.”
