On Jan.11, junior Tro’vonta Burgess watches as sophomore Haviland Ford sews a pocket to her t-shirt. The “Project Runway” makerspace gives students options to revamp their old t-shirts and create something new. “I love fashion it’s like really important to me. I just want to share (it) with everyone else and just be like a fun bonding experience and letting people see you don’t always have to go out and buy the most expensive things,” Burgess said. A “Project Runway” inspired event was held in the media center on Jan. 11 to allow students to get creative with t-shirts.
Junior Tro’vonta Burgess came up with the idea for students to take their unwanted clothing and upcycle and created the “Project Runway” event which took place on Jan. 11 in the Media Center.
“When I was researching what makerspace was, fashion caught my interest. I know a lot of people at Clarke Central liked the idea of fashion,” junior Troy Burgess said. “ I thought it would be a cool idea and plus it’s fun and everyone will like it no matter who you are.”
The Media Center staff looked at the makerspace idea as a way to help develop and promote skills within students.
“It’s kind of like a little project for us. It’s safe, it promotes great skills like creativeness skills, communication skills, do it yourself type things. And so (Ms.Weaver and Ms.Tedder) were just like ‘yeah it sounds like a cool idea’ and went from there,” Burgess said.
During makerspace, students were given four options to use their t-shirts for: a DIY bag, t-shirt pocket, distressing the t-shirt and t-shirt necklaces and bracelets. Senior Charis Stanford and other students who went to the occasion support the idea of recycling clothing.
“I feel like it’s better to turn something old and make it new and more modern, it’s a better way of reusing something instead of just throwing it away,” senior Charis Stanford said.
Burgess hopes to encourage students to reuse their old clothing and come up with ideas to use them.
“Recreating old things isn’t bad. It is still in style. Anything that’s old or used, you can always re-use it. It’s good to recycle,” Burgess said.
