Head girls track coach Quincy Wilkins discusses the the first meet of the season, which was on Feb. 27 and how the team is improving for upcoming meets.
Digital Managing Editor Aneesa Conine-Nakano: How do you think the (meet at Archer High School) went?
Head girls track coach Quincy Wilkins: It went pretty good. You know we have a young team so the girls were wide open and it was just a new experience. We have a lot of ninth and 10th graders so the experience was tremendous for them. They did a pretty good job for their first meet. We had some good showings.
ACN: What do you think the girls and the whole team learned from the meet?
QW: I just think since their were a lot of good teams that have won state titles, girls who were All-American for school. So what I think it will take for them to get better is to compete on that level. It’s not middle school anymore since we do have a young team, but being able to compete a varsity level, at the top of your game, being able to come to practice every day ready to work hard and when Saturday comes, it will be easy.
ACN: How are you preparing the girls for the next meet?
QW: Just pushing them a little bit harder than before since they have that first meet under the belt so upping the ante, lowering our times (and) pushing them a little harder than we had before.
ACN: How do you think the team can improve most?
QW: Go into practice ready to work hard, ready to give it all for the time we are out here, the hour, hour and a half we have practice. The girls come in here ready to work. I think that’s the main thing, having that positive attitude, like “Yes, I’m here. I’m ready to get better for the next meet” until the end of the season.
