Orchestra director Eunice Kang feels the new room is a better environment for her students to play in. The class will move one more time to its permanent location to where the Media Center used to be located. “It was formerly known as “Small Mell” and the area where the stage used to be is now a separate classroom,” Kang said. “They removed the seating and will convert it back into a lecture hall classroom after we move out.”

The orchestra room has moved again now from the trailer into a newly renovated room where “Small Mell” was previously located.
Due to recent finishes of construction completed over Winter Break, the orchestra room was able to move out of its trailer and into a new room on the first floor of the main building. Besides the slanted floor, orchestra director Eunice Kang is pleased with the change.
“I like room 153 quite well because it is newly remodeled with new carpet and walls,” Kang said. “The floor is slanted downward where the audience seats used to be, so that took a little getting used to but it is fine.”
The orchestra room, like the chorus room, were placed into trailers for the first semester in the 2015-2016 school year. The trailer made it difficult to maneuver and play in the tight space.
“We have much more space than we did in the trailer. It was so crowded there that we could not have any combined rehearsals,” Kang said. “Also, the sound quality is better than in the trailers. Because the trailer ceiling was so low, the acoustics were quite dull.”
Unlike Kang, freshman Sophie Mitchell prefers the trailer to the new room because of the slanted floors.
“(The new room) is okay. It is on a hill so it is hard to sit in a chair and I honestly liked the trailer better,” Mitchell said.
This is the second change in the placement of the orchestra room and it will not be the last. The room is expected to move to its permanent position nearing the end of the semester in the Fine Arts wing.
“Our future permanent room will be part of the Fine Arts wing, which was the former Media Center. This area will house orchestra, chorus, keyboarding and music technology,” Kang said. “We are so excited for its completion, hopefully sometime this semester.”
