The Student Government Association meets on Thurs., Aug. 27 in Room 289. In previous years, the SGA has seen a decrease in members; however, members expect a change this year. “(This year), we want to get more students involved and more student activities,” senior class president Britania Simister said. The Student Government Association begins a new year working hard to continue their traditions from the past and planning new events.
The Student Government Association (SGA) held its first meeting of the school year on Tues., Aug. 18 and will continue to hold meetings every Thursday after school in Room 289. The SGA has several plans for the 2015-16 school year.
“What we’re hoping to do this year is increase awareness of student government and to increase school spirit,” social studies department teacher and SGA sponsor Karena LaRosa said.
SGA members are in charge of planning Spirit Week activities for the week of the homecoming football game, which will include a Powder Puff football game on Sept. 23, as well as the homecoming game and pep rally on Sept. 25.
“We have new themes this year that we’re really excited about, so we’re hoping that will drum up more participation,” LaRosa said.
SGA members hope to continue the traditions they have implemented in previous years, such as the homecoming dance, which will be held Sept. 26 in the Clarke Central High School cafeteria. However, hosting the event will come with a price tag.
“Last year, they said (the budget) was about $2000 to $5000 just for the homecoming dance, so we’ll have to raise a lot of money,” senior class president Britania Simister said.
In addition to their traditions, SGA members plan to establish new events this school year, such as a 5K race during the spring and a homeless clothing drive.
“I hope that this year, people really enjoy and remember (SGA) for all the activities that we do,” Simister said.
