Clarke Central High School freshmen have the majority of their classes in the freshman academy, however, due to school renovations the freshman academy is located in a separate building.
The detached freshman academy provides a less disruptive learning environment for freshman and other grade levels.
“Last year in the main building we had a real problem with upper classmen coming to the freshman academy and hanging out near the bathrooms and just general interacting with the freshmen population,” science department teacher Maurice Bouchard said. “Now that we are out here isolated we don’t really have that problem at all. It has been a lot better.”
The isolation has caused students trouble; many students have to travel between buildings to get to class.
“You have to walk a lot and then you have to get tardies, it’s just too much,” freshman Nely Medrano said.
However, others appreciate the separation of the freshman academy.
“It is kind of nice having a bit more of a transition from going straight to middle school to high school,” freshman Emily Arkansas said.
Overall, students and teachers have responded positively to the relocation of the freshmen academy this year.
“I think that most of the freshman academy teachers say that this is amazing being out here,” Bouchard said.
