The powderpuff football game replaces the homecoming parade in an effort to have more student participation.
Clarke Central High School’s powderpuff football started last spring through the leadership of the current CCHS senior class president Micaela Cromer and former senior class president Mendi Cromer.
“Powderpuff was a huge event that our old school did, and we wanted to start that tradition together here at Clarke Central,” Micaela Cromer said. “Now as Senior Class President, I can continue the tradition that my sister and I both started.”
Powderpuff football is a gender swapped football game. Females are the players and the males are the cheerleaders.
“It’s just something fun and different from regular football that everyone can enjoy,” Cromer said.
This is the first year the homecoming parade has been replaced with the powderpuff game.
“The powderpuff game is taking place of the Homecoming parade because (Athletic Director Dr. Jon) Ward thought it might bring the crowds of the homecoming parade and the powder puff game together to create even more attendance,” Cromer said. “Last year, we did the the powderpuff game in the spring because that is when our old school did theirs.”
A number of people asked to place the game during the week of homecoming this year to hype students up, and have more students involved in Homecoming than originally would not be. The Student Government Association’s original plan was to hold the game after the parade and prep rally.
“The parade is so much trouble for not much attendance,” Cromer said. “That is when Coach Ward came up with the idea to get rid of the parade and merge the powder puff game with the pep rally to create a new tradition at Clarke Central that will hopefully bring a bigger crowd for both of the events.”
