Columbia Scholastic Press Association
The 2024-2025 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine/ODYSSEY Media Group (hybrid) was named a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. Student publishing in news, magazine, yearbook or digital (online) formats are all-eligible. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing.

Southern Interscholastic Press Association
The 2024 iliad was as recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.

Georgia Scholastic Press Association
The 2024 iliad Literary-Art Magazine received the rating of Superior for General Excellence. This is GSPA’s highest rating. These publications effectively maintain a high quality of content, editing and proofreading, organizational structure, typography, photography, illustrations and design.

Quill and Scroll Honor Society
The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine/ODYSSEY Media Group (website) received Superior Evaluations for General Practices, Coverage, Visuals, and Digital Media from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning a George H. Gallup Award – top recognition- for Comprehensive News Multimedia on Sept. 10, 2024. ODYSSEY publications have received multiple Gallup Awards from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society since 2008.

National Scholastic Press Association
The 2023-2024 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage and Content, Coverage and Content, Visuals, and Text. All-American publications must achieve 400-500 points with four-five Marks of Distinction. The ODYSSEY rated 447 points as a total score.

The 2023-2024 iliad Literary-Art Magazine “Prometheus” received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Content, Photography, Art , Graphics, Design and Concept. All-American publications must achieve 400-500 points with four-five Marks of Distinction. The iliad rated 471 points as a total score.

Youth Journalism International
Students from 14 countries were commended for their work through Youth Journalism International’s 2024 Excellence in Journalism contest. Among those receiving awards was Clarke Central High School senior Isabella Westrich. Westrich, who has served on the ODYSSEY Media Group all four years of high school and currently serves as its News Editor, won top honors as Student Journalist of the Year.

Finalists in Quill and Scroll’s Writing, Photo, Multimedia Contest were announced on March 21. The contest received more than 2,000 entries this year. The results were announced at the JEA/NSPA National High School Convention in Kansas City. Below is a list of this year’s finalists:

Cadence Schapker, Anna Shaikun, Wyatt Meyer, Cooper Jones, Evan Cornish, Eleanor Robinson, Aza Khan, Lucas Donnelly, Liya Taylor and Riley Ramsey became finalists for Multimedia Sports Package on March 21. The staffers placed First Place in the category on April 6.
Riley Ramsey, Nico Willman, Anna Shaikun and Antonio Starks became finalists for Multimedia Opinions Package on March 21. The staffers placed Second Place in the category on April 6.
Isabella Westrich became a finalist for DEI-Social Justice Writing on March 21. Westrich placed Third Place in the category on April 6.
Jane Ripps became a finalist for Review Writing on March 21. Ripps received an Honorable Mention in the category on April 6.
Anna Shaikun became a finalist for Non-Sports Column Writing on March 21. Shaikun received an Honorable Mention in the category on April 6.
Wyatt Meyer became a finalist for Sports Column Writing on March 21. Meyer received an Honorable Mention in the category on April 6

The 2022-2023 iliad Literary-Art Magazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on March 1, 2024. The iliad is one of 17 publications from across the country to be named a finalist. The iliad was named a Pacemaker on April 6, 2024, making it one of seven publications from across the country to receive the award this year.

The 2022-2023 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage and Content, Visuals, and Presentation. All-American publications must achieve 400-500 points with four-five Marks of Distinction. The ODYSSEY rated 425 points as a total score.

The 2022-2023 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on Sept. 5, 2023. The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine is one of 54 publications from across the country to be named a finalist. The magazine will be recognized as a Finalist on Nov. 4 in Boston, Mass.

NSPA Spring 2023 Clicks and Clips were announced on July 6. There were approximately 892 submissions in the spring competition. Judges were collegiate professors, student media advisers and professional journalists. In all, 124 entries, approximately 14 percent of those entered, were recognized. The ODYSSEY Media Group placed fourth in the Spring Clips & Clicks Sweepstakes by earning 124 points.

Anna Shaikun was named Georgia Champion Junior Journalist Runner-Up in recognition of outstanding achievement in scholastic journalism from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association on March 7, 2023.

David Ragsdale received a commendation from the Journalism Education Association’s Board of Directors on Nov. 18 for his service as JEA Georgia State Director for “outstanding leadership as a speaker, presenter and volunteer while expanding outreach and communication with members as Georgia state director.”

National Scholastic Press Association

The 2021-2022 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage, Content, Visuals and Presentation. All-American publications must achieve 400-500 points with four-five Marks of Distinction. The ODYSSEY rated 455 points as a total score.

The 2021-2022 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on Oct. 7, 2022. The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine is one of 38 publications from across the country to be named a finalist. The magazine was recognized as a Finalist on Nov. 12 in St. Louis, MO.

The 2022-2023 ODYSSEY Media Group (website) received a First Class evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The website received a Mark of Distinction for Interactive Media & Frequency. The website rated 445 out of 500 points as a total score.

The 2022 iliad Literary-Art Magazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Design, Content, Writing and Editing and Concept. All-American publications must achieve 400-500 points with four-five Marks of Distinction. The ODYSSEY rated 456 points as a total score.

The 2022 iliad Literary-Art Magazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on Feb. 23. The iliad is one of 15 literary magazines from across the country to be named a finalist. The magazine was recognized as a Finalist on April 22 in San Francisco, Ca.

NSPA Clicks and Clips were announced on Feb. 1. There were approximately 635 submissions in the fall competition. Judges were collegiate professors, student media advisers and professional journalists. In all, 105 entries, approximately 17 percent of those entered, were recognized. “The judges consistently said they were very impressed with the quality of the entries submitted,” NSPA associate director Gary Lundgren said.

The 2021-2022 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine/ODYSSEY Media Group (website) was named the recipient of The Gold Crown Award. The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. Student publishing in news, magazine, yearbook or digital (online) formats are all-eligible. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing. A total of 817 publications were eligible for judging.

The 2021 iliad Literary-Art Magazine rated a Gold Medalist designation in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic Literary Magazine Critique for 2021. Overall, the publications received 964/1000 points. The publication received All-Columbian Honors for Essentials, Verbal and Visual.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association named ODYSSEY Media Group Adviser David Ragsdale as the National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year. The Iliad rated 474 points as a total score.

The 2020-2021 iliad Literary-Art Magazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on March 3. The iliad is one of 20 publications from across the country to be named a finalist. The magazine was named a Pacemaker on April 9, 2022.

The NSPA Honor Roll of Student Journalists honors students who have worked on an NSPA member publication for two or more years and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale. Publication advisers or journalism instructors have nominated these students for the honor. NSPA also awards one or more Honor Roll Scholarships annually to graduating seniors inducted into the Honor Roll. Scholarship winners will be announced in May.

The 2020 iliad was recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school. The Iliad received top evaluations in Reader Assistance, Design, Visual Content, and Special Touches.

The 2019-20 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine was recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school. The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received top evaluations in Advertising, Features, News, Opinion, Sports, Photography & Graphics and Design & Presentation.

The 2019 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine was selected to receive a rank of Excellent in the 2019 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) Program.
 
 
National Scholastic Press Association

The 2018-19 Odyssey Newsmagazine rated an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage & Content, Text, Visuals and Presentation. All-American publications must earn 400 or more points plus four or five Marks of Distinction. The Odyssey accrued 470/500 points as a total score.

The 2019 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine received a First Class evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Photography/Arts/Graphics, Writing and Editing, and Content. First Class publications must score a minimum of 450 points. The Iliad rated 458 points as a total score.

The NSPA Honor Roll of Student Journalists honors students who have worked on an NSPA member publication for two or more years and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale. Publication advisers or journalism instructors have nominated these students for the honor. NSPA also awards one or more Honor Roll Scholarships annually to graduating seniors inducted into the Honor Roll. Scholarship winners will be announced in May.

The ODYSSEY Newsmagazine/ODYSSEY Media Group (website) received Superior Evaluations for General Practices, Coverage, Visuals, Writing/Editing and Digital Media from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning a Henry Gallup Award – top recognition- for Comprehensive News Multimedia. ODYSSEY publications have received Gallup Awards from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society for the last 11 years.

Audrey Enghauser has been declared a National Winner in the Quill and Scroll 2020 International Writing, Photo and Multimedia Contest. The winning entry in the News Writing category was titled, “A restorative approach”.

The 2018 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine received a First Class evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Photography/Arts/Graphics, Design, and Concept. First Class publications must score a minimum of 450 points. The Iliad rated 463 points as a total score.

The 2017-2018 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association. The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage and Content, Text, Visuals and Presentation. The ODYSSEY received 455/500 points as a total score.

The 2017-2018 ODYSSEY Newsmagazine was named a Pacemaker Finalist on Sept. 17. The ODYSSEY is one of 67 publications from across the country to be named a finalist.

The NSPA Honor Roll of Student Journalists honors students who have worked on an NSPA member publication for two or more years and have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four-point scale. Publication advisers or journalism instructors have nominated these students for the honor. NSPA also awards one or more Honor Roll Scholarships annually to graduating seniors inducted into the Honor Roll. Scholarship winners will be announced in May.

The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage & Content, Visuals, Presentation and Text. All-American publications must earn 400-500 points and four or five Marks of Distinction. The Odyssey accrued 475 points as a total score.

The 2016-17 Clarke Central High School Iliad Literary-Art Magazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Literary Art Magazine critique for 2017. The magazine received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) Verbal and Visual; the magazine received a score of 850 out of a possible 1000.

The 2016-17 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine/Odyssey Online was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic News Hybrid Print/Digital Critique for 2017. The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Visual and Verbal. Overall, the magazine received 976/1000 points.

The 2015 Iliad was as recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for ninth time in 11 years. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.  The Iliad received top evaluations in Reader Services, Art/Photography, Non-fiction, Creative Writing and Special Touches.

 

The 2015-16 Odyssey Newsmagazine was recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for the eleventh-consecutive year.  This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. The 2014 Iliad Literary and Art Magazine received the 2014 Program to Recognize Excellence Student Literary Magazines’ rank of Superior – Nominated for Highest Award.

 

National Scholastic Press Association

The Odyssey Online received an All American rating, the highest critique designation, from the National Scholastic Press Association and garnered Marks of Distinction for Coverage/Content, Interactivity/Community, Design/Navigation, and Rich Media on January 27, 2015.  All-American websites must receive 3,400 or more points plus four or five Marks of Distinction – the Odyssey Online received 3,700 points and achieved 4/5 Marks of distinction.

The Odyssey Online was named a Pacemaker Finalist.  This is a distinction only 30 out of 172 schools received.  https://studentpressblogs.org/nspa/2014-nspa-online-pacemaker-finalists-announced-2/  The Odyssey Online was named a Pacemaker winner in April.

The 2013-14 Odyssey Newsmagazine rated an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage, Writing/Editing, Photos/Art/Graphics, and Layout.  All-American publications must earn 450 or more points plus four or five Marks of Distinction.  The Odyssey accrued 555 points as a total score.

 

The 2013-14 Iliad Literary-Art Magazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Content, Writing/Editing, Photography/Arts/Graphics/Typography and Layout.  All-American publications must achieve 450 or more points, plus four or five Marks of Distinction. The Iliad rated 515 points as a total score.

The 2013-14 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic News Hybrid Print/Digital Critique for 2014.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Essentials, Visual and Verbal.  Overall, the magazine received 975/1000 points.

 

The 2013-14 Clarke Central High School Odyssey Newsmagazine/Odyssey Online were rated as CSPA High School Crown Finalists.  The Odyssey Newsmagazine/Odyssey Online were ranked Silver Crown – one of 196 publications recognized this year as a Crown winner.

The Odyssey Newsmagazine was awarded Superior Evaluations for Overall Coverage, Visuals and Writing/Editing from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society, thus earning a Henry Gallup Award- top recognition.  This is the sixth time the publication has received a Gallup Award from the Quill and Scroll Honor Society.

 The 2014-15 Odyssey was recognized as GSPA’s All Georgia Newsmagazine (highest honors); the publication has achieved All Georgia for the seventh time in eight years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).  The Odyssey received the General Excellence award for the 10th consecutive year, as well as a Superior rating. 

 

The Iliad Literary-Art Magazine for 2013-14 received the General Excellence award and was named All Georgia (highest honors).  

 

The Odyssey Online website received a Superior rating; likewise, it received the 2014-15 General Excellence News Website award and was rated All Georgia (highest honors) for the third-consecutive year.

and rich media to give users an excellent record of the school and up-to-date information. The Odyssye Online received top evaluations in Coverage & Content, Breaking News, and Design & Navigation.  This is the third consecutive year the site has been so named.

The 2011-12 Odyssey Newsmagazine received an All-American evaluation by the National Scholastic Press Association.  The publication received Marks of Distinction for Coverage/Content, Writing/Editing, Photos/Art/Graphics, and Leadership.  All-American publications must score a minimum of 3,200 points.  The Odyssey rated 4,218 as a total score.


The 2011-12 Odyssey Online received an honor rating of First Class with Two Marks of Distinction in the NSPA Publication Website Critique Service.

The Odyssey Online went on to be named a Pacemaker winner in April.

and rich media to give users an excellent record of the school and up-to-date information. The Odyssey Online received top evaluations in Coverage & Content, Design & Navigation and Interactivity & Community.  This is the second consecutive All Southern award for the site.

The 2011-12 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Newspaper Critique for 2012.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Essentials, Visual and Verbal.  Overall, the magazine received 967/1000 points.

Southern Interscholastic Press Association

The 2010-11 Odyssey was recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for the sixth-consecutive year.  This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.  The Odyssey received top evaluations in Reader Services, Overall Visuals, Editing, Advertising, News, Opinion, Features, and Sports.

The 2010 Iliad was as recognized as All-Southern by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association for fourth time in six years. This is SIPA’s highest evaluation rating. These publications demonstrate excellence in all areas of scholastic journalism production. These publications effectively integrate writing, design and photography/art to give readers an excellent record of the school.  The Iliad received top evaluations in Reader Services, Special Touches and Non-Fiction.  The Iliad went on to be named the Albert T. Scroggins Award winner for overall excellence at SIPA’s All Access Convention in Columbia, SC on March 6, 2011.

The 2010 Iliad Literary and Art Magazine received the 2010 Program to Recognize Excellence Student Literary Magazines’ Highest Award.

 

Columbia Scholastic Press Association


The 2009-10 Clarke Central Odyssey Newsmagazine was rated as a Gold Medalist in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Newspaper Critique for 2010.  The Odyssey received All-Columbian honors (top ranking) for Coverage, Graphic Presentation, Business Operations and missed All-Columbian honors in Writing and Editing by 4 points (376/400).  Overall, the magazine received 955/1000 points.

This year 1,434 magazines, newspapers, yearbooks and online publications of the current CSPA members were eligible to enter the Crown Awards. Judging for printed publications took place at Columbia University from December 11-13, 2010 by the Board of Crown Judges. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics.  The 2010 Odyssey was ranked as Silver Crown winner on March 18, 2011.

  • NSPA ranked the Odyssey as First Class in its yearly critique, earning 454 out of a possible 500 points.  NSPA gave the Odyssey marks of distinction for Content and also in Concept.
  • NSPA has named the 2010 Iliad as a Pacemaker Award winner.
  • NSPA ranked the Iliad Literary-Art Magazine as First class in its yearly critique, earning 469 of a possible 500 points.  NSPA gave the Iliad marks of distinction for Writing and Editing, as well as for Concept.
  • The ODYSSEY was awarded 6th Place in the Best in Show competition for Newsmagazines at the Fall NSPA/JEA Journalism Conference in Kansas City, MO.

The Georgia Scholastic Press Association Awards Banquet was full of pleasant surprises this year.

    The 2008-9 Odyssey received GSPA’s General Excellence award for the fourth consecutive year and was recognized as Best Newsmagazine in the State by the GSPA for the second consecutive year–a first in the state within the last five years. As a staff, the Odyssey won Best Photojournalism in Georgia, Best Features Coverage in Georgia and Best Sports Coverage in Georgia. The iliad literary-art magazine also received the General Excellence award and a Superior rating from GSPA. 
In one of the most exciting moments of the afternoon, GSPA honored Superintendent James Simms at the 2009 Administrator of the Year. The Odyssey leadership team nominated Simms for this award based on his dedication to and support of the program.
Individual members of both the Odyssey and Iliad staffs also received a number of awards for their hard work.
