Clarke Central High School Contemporary Literature and Composition student Andres Nava, a senior, holds a copy of his poem “A Land Of Pain and Hope” in the CCHS Media Center Courtyard on Dec. 3. In the past, Nava has struggled with public speaking, but has prepared to perform in the CCHS Poetry Showcase, which will take place today at 6 p.m. in the CCHS Media Center. “I’m really excited to perform my poems out loud, because this is my second (Poetry) Showcase, and last time I just let somebody else read my own poem, because I was not sure if it was good enough or not,” Nava said. “(I was) not sure if I was gonna be understood, because at that time I didn’t think my English was good enough.” Photos by Sylvia Robinson and from the ODYSSEY archives, graphics by Lea D’Angelo
