Mandatory practices for flag football started on Sept. 9 and to ensure players attend, Pass uses a depth chart. “If a player doesn’t show up, they move down the depth chart, next man up. People always like to see their name at the top, so that holds a little bit (of) leverage over them,” Pass said. Photo by Makiyah Thrasher
The Clarke Central High School varsity flag football team has begun its preparation for the 2024-25 season, with hopes of winning the state championship title this year.
In its third year of play, the Clarke Central High School varsity flag football team under head coach Cherrelle Pass have begun preparation for the season.
Last year, the varsity team had an overall record of 11-6 in their region of D1 Area 6, and made it to the second round of the state playoffs. This year, Pass hopes to make it further by starting practices and scrimmages in June.
“The expectations for this season is to finish with a winning record (and) pursue a state championship,” Pass said. “It’s going to take more work by the coaching staff to be able to watch film (and) break down film, but also getting the girls to know to do their part.”
With the state championship title in sight; a change to D2 Area 7 East wrinkled the team’s plan. Although they moved down a division, the amount of teams required to beat in order to make it to state has increased.
“We have a tough schedule. The teams that we’re playing all have had some kind of form in being in the Sweet 16, Final Four (or) Elite Eight, so we definitely have stacked our schedule to play some good competition,” Pass said.

Even with the area change, flag football defensive back and punter Cameron Mojock, a junior, remains confident the team can reach their goal of state champions by utilizing new players and effort from all.
“My expectations are pretty high. The new people that are coming in are really athletic and they’re picking up really fast. Hopefully, we’ll do even better than we did last year because we have more experience,” Mojock said. “We could definitely win (if) we put in the work.”
