Throughout the 2023-24 season, the Clarke Central High School track and field team has used practices and meets to prepare for the April 20 Georgia High School Association 5A Region 8 meet in hopes of continuing their season at sectional and state-level competitions.
To move past the regional competition, athletes must place in the top four spots of their respective events. CCHS Varsity track and field sprinter and high jumper Breyanna Williams, a junior, will compete in the Georgia High School Association 5A Region meet in Loganville, Ga. on April 20.
“(I’m) very nervous, (and) I’m really excited because I love competing. The only reason I do all of these practices and practice in the rain is so I can compete well in (Regionals). As soon as (the GHSA 5A Region 8 meet) is done, that is the biggest breath of relief for me because after that, sectionals flies by and then it’s to state. Region is the Goliath you gotta beat,” Williams said.

CCHS track and field coach Lee Patterson has seen growth in the team throughout the track and field season. Patterson has high hopes for Regionals, especially for the distance runners.
“I’m expecting big things from our group because they had an incredible (season in the past). They had great training, we won Region in cross-country for years in a row and runner-up in State last year. We finished third this year. Expectations are really high, our distance crew and their expectations are high within themselves,” Patterson said.
Patterson hopes the team, especially their seniors, will place highly at the regional meet to continue their season and make it to state.
“We don’t take anything for granted, we will be very grateful (if we make it to state). It means more for (seniors), because I know (state is) a building block to the next step. To regions, state or to sectionals (seniors) can continue their career,” Patterson said.
