The cast of “A Miscellaneous Musical” performs their bows on their April 27 closing night performance. Senior and cast member Kaitlyn Ortiz felt that the cast’s energy was a highlight of both shows. “The first night was definitely our trial and error night. We were prepared and we all felt good, but it was more like ‘Let’s see what’s gonna happen,’” Ortiz said. “The second night for me personally was the roughest. It was not my best performance, but the cast’s energy was great. It was really good.” Photo by Natalie Schliekelman

After three months of preparation, students in the fine arts department performed ensemble songs, solos, scenes and monologues in their Spring showcase, “A Miscellaneous Musical,” on April 26 and 27 and 7 p.m. in the Mell Auditorium.
Fine arts department teacher Kellsey Vogel directed the production with help from fine arts department teacher Emily Button and special education department teacher Steve Hardwick. Throughout the process, she helped select pieces for students to perform and offered them guidance and direction for their acting, dancing and singing.
“This whole process was difficult because we were creating the show as we went, not working from a created and complete script. There was a lot of discussion and student opinion which I think ultimately helped the students care even more about their performance,” Vogel said. “The first night they were amazing and then the second night they brought even more energy and blew me away.”

To senior and cast member Kaitlyn Ortiz, who performed “Come To Your Senses” from Tick Tick…Boom as a solo in the showcase, the cast’s close bonds made their performance stronger.
“We were all nervous, but surprisingly enough, we all felt really prepared. We didn’t have that many rehearsals, but I think as a cast, we felt prepared coming through and we did a lot of work with choreography and stuff like that. I think the energy kept building, teamwork kept building, so that was great,” Ortiz said.
Watching the students perform on stage, Vogel felt pride and happiness for the cast.
“It was such a joy to see the students perform. For many students, I knew their personal stories and what they were overcoming or their why behind performing,” Vogel said. “This made me so proud because I got to see students from all grades and all backgrounds come together as a team and support each other. It made my heart so happy to watch them shine on stage.”Listen to the cast of “Miscellaneous Musical” perform “A Million Dreams” from the Greatest Showman
