The ODYSSEY Media Group poses for a picture at the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education at the conclusion of the 2022 Georgia Scholastic Press Association Workshop and Awards Banquet on April 11. While on site, students from across the state attended three rounds of sessions, engaged in a keynote speech and took part in an awards ceremony. “I enjoyed the workshop. It was an educational experience that will send our seniors off into the real world with valuable resources and for our younger kids, we’ll be able to implement new strategies with fidelity in our upcoming work,” junior Lucas Donnelly, a Journalism I Facilitator and OMG photographer, said. CCHS journalists attended the Georgia Scholastic Press Association’s Spring Workshop and Awards Banquet for the first time since 2019.
Nearly 40 members of the ODYSSEY Media Group, Journalism I class and Iliad Literary-Art Magazine attended the Georgia Scholastic Press Association’s Spring Workshop and Banquet at the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education yesterday.
The event was held face-to-face for the first time since spring 2019 and for ODYSSEY Newsmagazine Editor-In-Chief Audrey Enghauser, a senior, the event felt like a homecoming.
“I hadn’t been to a GSPA banquet since my freshman year, which was just an overwhelming experience, and I got to see my name recognized for one of the first times,” Enghauser said. “Now, I feel like I’m seeing beyond the awards and my biggest takeaway from the event is how much closer we’ve grown as a staff. I think that’s much more important.”
Senior Chloe Sears served as a GSPA Ambassador throughout the school year and took over the GSPA Instagram account during the event, as well as co-presented a session on journalistic objectivity with sophomore Audrey St. Onge, which adviser David Ragsdale facilitated.
“It was an incredible experience,” Sears said. “I’ve never presented at a conference before this, so it felt really good to get this experience and end my ambassadorship for GSPA on a high note at the same time.”
Junior Kalli Samaltanos-Wargo and sophomore Molly Harwell co-presented a session on productive podcasts with Ragsdale facilitating. Junior Lucas Donnelly and sophomore Maya Clement co-presented a session on team building and team bridging with Ragsdale facilitating.
“Overall, I think we did well. I’m proud of us for our ability to answer any and all questions thrown our way,” Clement said. “I think we kept high energy throughout our presentation, which, in turn, made for a comfortable and interactive audience.”
Following the keynote speech by award-winning digital content creator Keysha Lee, which focused on purpose-driven journalism, the annual awards ceremony took place. OMG students received numerous awards including taking home All Georgia (Best in State) ratings for the ODYSSEY Newsmagazine, ODYSSEY Media Group website and the iliad literary-art magazine.
The newsmagazine previously won All Georgia in 2008-2009, 2011-2016 and 2018-2021. The iliad has been an All Georgia publication in 2011 and 2014-2021, and the website has been an All Georgia publication in 2012-2016, 2018-2020 and 2022.
“It felt really good to win All-Georgia Newsmagazine, because I’ve worked really hard this year to motivate our staff to write quality stories, and edit effectively, so being recognized for that work is awesome,” Enghauser said. “It’s great to enjoy that win with the staff and celebrate.”
