“Tall Girl 2,” released to Netflix on Feb. 11, presents an uneventful narrative with a lackluster viewing experience.
“Tall Girl 2,” the sequel to “Tall Girl,” was released exclusively to Netflix on Feb. 11. The movie, which follows Jodi Kreyman (Ava Michelle) with her newfound popularity, provides a melodramatic and unrelatable plot for its audience.
Directed by Emily Ting, “Tall Girl 2” takes viewers through Jodi’s challenges from being cast as the main character in her school musical and dealing with a negative voice in her head to navigating her complicated relationship with Jack Dunkleman (Griffin Gluck), the sweet, but overly obsessive boyfriend.
While the movie briefly touches on topics such as body image, insecurities and self-doubt, setting a good underlying message – learn to accept yourself for who you are – it leaves a lot to be desired.
The plot is scattered and the majority of the movie is directed towards small, insignificant drama. Will Jodi perform well in the school musical? Which boy should she date? As a result, the entire movie gives an unrealistic portrayal of mental health and high school life. Every scene is a constant reminder of Jodi’s height, which she seemingly can’t stop talking about.

The actors also have little chemistry, leading to many forced relationships and awkward scenes that will leave viewers cringing in their seats from second-hand embarrassment.
With no unique message or spectacular acting to supplement, “Tall Girl 2” is just another average teen romance movie on Netflix. There is little character development, aside from the typical mean girl who suddenly realizes her mistakes, and while new characters are introduced, it feels as if the producers added them in simply to create unnecessary conflict.
Although viewers can expect to see more of Jodi’s friend, the high spirited fashionista Fareeda (Anjelika Washington), as well as some new and abrupt relationships, most other characters are overshadowed by Jodi.
All in all, “Tall Girl 2” is an unnecessary sequel that nobody asked for. With a self-absorbed main character and a storyline like almost every other teen romance movie, viewers will know how the movie ends five minutes into watching it.
