The team started their season on Jan. 25 with a 5-1 win against Morgan County High School and hopes to win their first region game against Greenbrier High School. “Our rate of possession is really high this season, which means we are making the other teams chase us while we have the ball,” head girls varsity soccer coach and Assistant Athletic Director Chris Hulse said. “(But I hope) that we will be content with our effort, regardless of the results.” Photo by Aza Khan
The CCHS girls varsity soccer team will play Greenbrier High School for their first region game of the 2021-22 season, potentially bringing them one step closer to the state playoffs.
After kicking off the season with a 5-1 win against Morgan County High School on Jan. 25, the Clarke Central High School girls varsity soccer team is preparing to play against the defending region champions, Greenbrier High School, in their first Region 8-AAAAA game of the season on Feb. 11 in Death Valley.
With the game fast approaching, head girls varsity soccer coach and Assistant Athletic Director Chris Hulse hopes the team can outperform their previous games.
“There is no aspect of our game that we cannot continue to improve in,” Hulse said. “It is my hope that we are a better team each and every game than we were (in) the contest prior.”
According to CCHS girls varsity soccer holding midfielder and team captain Ava Sims, a senior, despite facing some challenges, the team has managed to start the season out strong.
“We need to work on communication. Sometimes we lack talking to each other throughout the game, but once we figured that out, we’re fine,” Sims said.
Only one month into the season, the team is still settling in and adjusting to new team dynamics, but Sims is optimistic about the upcoming game.
“Right now, we’re getting used to playing with each other and connecting passes and making smarter decisions with each other,” Sims said. “A win against Greenbrier or any region team would be great. It’s one step closer to being a playoff team and hopefully hosting a playoff match.”
As the season progresses, Hulse expects the team to give it their all and try their best.
“I want us to continue to put forth our best effort each and every day,” Hulse said. “I believe that we can be our own biggest weakness if we ever take any step for granted.”
