The spectacular effects and deep story in Dune, which was released to theatres and HBO Max on Oct. 22, will leave viewers wanting more.
Dive into a world filled with sand, dreams and destiny in the newest retelling of Dune. Originally a classic science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, the newest version of Dune came out on Oct. 22 and is available on HBO Max and in theatres.
Dune takes place in outer space in the year 10,191 on the home planets of the Atreides family, the Harkonnen family, and the Fremen people. The movie follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) on his journey to the desert planet of Arrakis.
With political tensions rising and destiny intertwined, Paul Atreides, his father Leto Atreides, (Oscar Isaac) his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and his other mentors try to survive Baron Harkonen (Stellan Skarsgård).
The movie will captivate science fiction fans, but with the 155 minute runtime, regular viewers may be bored. The story has been split into two parts so having only half the story may upset anyone who wants resolution.
The movie is salvaged through director Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful cinematography. Through attention to even the small details, he creates a viewing experience that is on another level.
The length and incomplete story are not the only problems. While actress Zendaya was heavily teased in the trailers, her character is only on screen for a total of seven minutes. The false expectation may leave Zendaya fans disappointed.
However, the movie is salvaged through director Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful cinematography. Through attention to even the small details, he creates a viewing experience that is on another level, emphasized by minimalist effects and the focus on the actor’s small movements.
The newest Dune weaves a more complex and dramatic story than the 1984 film. The story is more slowly paced and allows viewers to take their time and understand the plot fully.
The slow pace can make the movie seem dull and drawn-out at times, but the science fiction fantasy world is intriguing nonetheless. The movie’s effects are amazing, and although widespread space travel and body shields don’t exist, Dune captures their essence and makes viewers believe they should.
The film includes lots of action but still leaves room for a gripping plot. By telling the tantalizing stories of the individuals in Dune, the creators of this film created a wonderful film anyone can immerse themselves in. Dune is sure to have science fiction super-fans waiting eagerly for part two.
