The Clarke Central High School swim team practices at the University of Georgia’s Ramsey Center on Oct. 14. Swim practices started on Oct. 11 and take place Monday through Thursday each week. “We do 30 minutes of dry land (exercise), whether it’s running, core strength, stretching, (or) something along those lines outside of the water to help benefit us in the water,” swimmer Harrison Carmack, a senior, said. “It could be an hour to an hour and a half of practice, usually with some sort of warm up, some sort of kick set, and then a main set that focuses on a specific skill for the day.” Photo by Isabella Westrich
Head CCHS swimming and diving coach Emily Hulse has many goals for the CCHS swimming and diving team in their upcoming season, which started on Oct. 11.
The Clarke Central High School swimming and diving team officially started its season on Oct. 11.
Several meets are scheduled throughout the upcoming season, but head swimming and diving coach Emily Hulse’s biggest athletic goal for the team is that they will perform well in the state swim meet preliminaries on Feb. 5, 2022 and qualify for the finals on Feb. 6, 2022.
“The state swim meet is always a goal for us. We’ve always gone to the state swim meet, (but) you have to qualify with times to get there,” Hulse said. “An individual can go in individual events. One of our goals is to get some individuals going if possible, as well as our relay teams.”
“One of the goals is to get more kids involved. Getting new swimmers in, getting them some experience, that’s a goal that we’re already on our way to reaching.”

Qualifying for the state swim meet is also a personal goal for swimmer Harrison Carmack, a senior, and he is working towards that this season.
“I went to state last year and I’m trying to go back to state this year. There’s a certain event, (the 50 freestyle), that I want to go to state in and I’m working on that at the moment,” Carmack said.
Outside of swimming, Hulse hopes to encourage new swimmers to join the program and initiate bonding between team members.
“One of the goals is to get more kids involved. Getting new swimmers in, getting them some experience, that’s a goal that we’re already on our way to reaching,” Hulse said. “Then I’m hoping to bring back some of the team bonding activities that we’ve done in the past (but couldn’t do last year due to COVID-19), like a team dinner.”
Hulse is excited to see swimmers practice, improve and bond throughout the upcoming season.
“I’m feeling excited, it’s always fun to start (the season). I love practices, I love seeing (the swimmers) improve and be on the team and have that team camaraderie,” Hulse said.
