“Doom Eternal”, a sequel released four years after “Doom”, is an action-packed first-person shooter video game. While some players may find the game more challenging than its predecessor, “Doom Eternal” ultimately awards the player with a more satisfying experience. Photo fair use of Bethesda.net
“Doom Eternal” was released on March 20 as the sequel to the 2016 game, “Doom”. However, close attention should be paid to the game’s Mature rating, as “Doom” is a franchise spanning back to the 90’s with violence as a central theme of each new installment.
When “Doom” released in 1993, a franchise was born that would span decades. The March 20 release of “Doom Eternal” continues that legacy and leaves players more than satisfied with the latest creation from Bethesda Softworks.
Each of the “Doom” games revolves around the Slayer, the nameless protagonist the player controls. In “Doom Eternal”, the Slayer is tasked with saving Earth from a demonic alien species known as the Hellspawn.
The game’s fast-paced action forces players into firefights that require split-second decision-making and lightning-quick reflexes. During most action sequences, standing still for more than three seconds is rarely an option.
“Doom Eternal” offers a competitive multiplayer scene in addition to its lengthy campaign mode to be played after the completion of the main storyline. Multiplayer works in a two v. one arena but with a twist.
Two players control the demonic aliens and one player controls the Slayer. The players acting as the aliens are able to summon additional Hellspawn to help defeat the opposing Slayer.
While the Slayer spends the entire round outmanned, they are certainly not outgunned. They retain a full arsenal of weapons and are able to pick up health and ammo from the demons they have slain throughout the game.
“Doom Eternal” is playable on Play Station 4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch; available for just about anyone with a modern game console. The game comes in at $60.00; standard for any new AAA videogame; but for “Doom Eternal”, it is more than worth the cost.
An explosive first-person shooter is not a genre that appeals to everyone, especially one with a consistent theme of violence that requires a high level of maturity. Someone looking to spend a reasonable amount for a five-star thrill ride with an R rating should look no further than the winner of ‘Best Action Game’ of the year award at the 2019 Game Critics Awards.
