The limited-time documentary series “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” was released onto Netflix on Jan. 15, and features the life and times of former college and professional football star Aaron Hernandez.
The one and only season of the limited Netflix documentary series “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” was released on Jan. 15. The show is directed by Greg McDermott and follows the life of the deceased former football star Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of murder on April 15, 2015. The documentary captures the life of Hernandez in a horrifying light and opens viewers’ eyes to the private lives of a unique professional athlete.
With three episodes, each around an hour, the series attempts to explore the primary causes that led Hernandez to commit multiple crimes acts, including the murder of his friend Odin Lloyd. Interviews are conducted with former high school teammates, close family friends and his partner, ultimately unveiling details of his life living with a strict father and distant mother. It also goes more in-depth into the questions surrounding Hernandez’s surroundings.
The show then moves into exploring his time at the University of Florida, diving into Hernandez’s murder trials – he was acquitted of a 2017 double murder charge. This part of the documentary could have been expanded to include key interviews from his college teammates and coaches.
The cinematography of Hernandez playing football makes the documentary visually appealing to the audience. This documentary series may not be appropriate for younger children because of the graphic subject matter, but it is important for teenagers and parents to watch so they can learn about Hernandez’s life experiences. It is also very informational on the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and marijuana usage among professional athletes.
The show does have flaws such as a disorienting timeline and a lack of important voices, such as Tim Tebow. However, “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” is an intriguing and shocking documentary series. One may have never guessed that a successful athlete from Bristol, Connecticut could live a double life — both as a football star and a cold-blooded murderer.
