Clarke Central High School girls varsity basketball player Mikaylyn Glover, a senior, is being guarded by a Cedar Shoals High School player during the CSHS versus CCHS game on Jan. 25. CCHS guard India Sheats, a freshman, didn’t play due to an injury but feels the team needs to work on their defense. “Next time, I feel like we should just put more pressure on them, and make sure that we cover everybody, because if we don’t, then they’re going to score automatically,” Sheats said. On Jan 25, the Cedar Shoals High School girls varsity basketball team beat Clarke Central High School for the second time this season, with a final score of 63-50.
The Clarke Central High School girls varsity basketball team lost to Cedar Shoals High School on Jan. 25 with a score of 50-63.
According to CCHS girls varsity basketball team head coach Carla Johnson, the beginning of the game went well with CCHS holding a lead of 14-11 at the end of the first quarter but started falling behind after halftime.
“At the beginning, we were executing our affairs, we were getting some shots that we wanted. Defensively, we were playing fairly well. It was kinda up and down– they’ll get some runs, we’ll get some runs,” Johnson said. “Toward the end of the game, (CSHS) had a really good run there in the fourth quarter, (but) we didn’t counter it.”
CCHS girls varsity point guard India Sheats, a freshman, believes that although CCHS lost, they played a better game overall than their first game against CSHS on Jan. 4 which they lost 49-59.
“We played harder this game. In the beginning, we were up. (The last game), we weren’t like that,” Sheats said. “It was a good game to be honest, because everybody was taking their shots, everybody was helping, (there were) a lot (of good things going on).”
CCHS varsity basketball cheerleader Ka’mora Walter, a sophomore, enjoyed the excitement from the crowd and energy the game brought.
“I just feel like it’s a big rivalry game, so it’s fun. The hype is fun. Being a cheerleader in the hype is fun,” Walter said.
The game ended in a victory for CSHS, with a final score of 63-50. CCHS athletic director Jon Ward was dismayed by this loss but hoped that the boys game would have a better outcome.
“We got a great crowd here today– It’s a great event for the community, all of Athens. Obviously, I hope the Clarke Central teams win. Unfortunately, we haven’t so far (with the girls’ loss). We’re at halftime in the boys game, so we’ll see how this turns out,” Ward said.
According to Johnson, the biggest thing the team needs to work on is their defense to prepare for future games.
“We weren’t really attacking their defense to where we needed to. I think we only went to the free-throw line twice all night. That’s just unacceptable for a thirty-two-minute game,” Johnson said. “I just think right now, picking up our defensive intensity overall (is what we need to work on), not just at the beginning of (the) quarter, but all the way through the game.”
