“Last Chance U” season four, titled “INDY Part 2,” follows the Independence Community College football program throughout the 2018-19 football season.
The fourth season of Netflix’s documentary series, ‘Last Chance U,’ was released on July 19. The show directed by Luke Lorentzen follows Head Coach Jason Brown and his Independence Community College (ICC) football team.
The show starts by introducing the viewer to the main characters of the show and drama they bring to the team. Last season, the ICC Pirate football teams’ record was 9-2, and it was the best season for ICC football in 30 years. The first four episodes of this season were some of the best episodes throughout the whole series. The final four episodes of the show, however, might have been some of the worst in the show’s history.
What made the first four episodes so great was the belief in the team that the players had. That belief was gone by the fifth game. The team did not have a winning season and ended the season with a 2-7 record. ICC was losing a lot of games, therefore the team gave up on buying into the coaching staff, and the players started to think only about getting a scholarship somewhere else.
The main cause of these problems was Coach Brown. Brown was a toxic, enraging and infuriating character to watch because of his poor decision making. The way Brown talks to his players is intolerable and it makes the audience sympathize for the players. The series shows Brown’s true colors.
This behavior is what eventually forced Coach Brown to resign at the end of the season. Brown told one of his German players that he was “his new Hitler.”Once this came out, the Independence administration dealt with it appropriately by demanding Brown to resign. An ESPN article written by Adam Writtenburg documented exactly what Coach Brown text the player in question, Alexandros Alexiou. “Referring to disciplinary points that Alexiou had accrued for missteps,” Brown allegedly wrote, ’410pm on field u German f–k. u have 17 points toward your 25 points (…) u got an extra point for not hanging the lion poster as instructed. I’m your new Hitler figure out your life.’”
This shows how a football coach is not supposed to run his program or talk to his players. This behavior by a coach at any level.
Overall this season of “Last Chance U” was good, but it does not hold up to the standards and quality of the previous three seasons. If Coach Brown ran his program more organized and the players kept buying into the program the fourth season of “Last Chance U” would have been a lot better.
