Well known Atlanta mumble rapper Young Thug released his “On the Rvn” EP on Sept. 24 after a warrant for his arrest was publicized two weeks earlier.
On Sept. 24, Atlanta native Young Thug released his third EP “On the Rvn”. The EP consists of six tracks, all of which display how versatile the rapper has proven to be.
Unlike his other Atlanta peers, Young Thug has consistently bounced back and forth between different rapping styles during his entire career. Before renowned mumble rappers like Lil Peep, XXXtention, Trippie Redd and Lil Uzi Vert hit headlines, Young Thug had been experimenting with the unconventional, and oftentimes looked down upon, style of rap for years.
For example, in the 2017 album “Beautiful Thugger Girls” he combines acoustic, trap, and R&B, which at the time was ahead of the curve. However, “On the Rvn” takes Thug back to his roots of mumble rap and autotune. In songs like “Sin” featuring Jaden Smith, listeners can hear its similarity to other songs on other albums such as “JEFFERY” and “Barter 6”.
While “On the Rvn” gives listeners a sense of familiarity, there is something different Thug has brought to the table this time around. Whether that be the unique list of features on the EP, which include Elton John, T-Shyne, 6LACK and Jaden Smith or his found improvement in lyricism.
In the song “Climax” featuring 6LACK, Thug mentions his recent battle with the law earlier this Sept. when a warrant for his arrest was issued. In verse two of “Climax”, listeners hear about the rappers struggle with the inevitability of his situation; “Can’t complain about nothin’ (can’t complain about nothin’!) How the f*** am I ever gon’ go turn myself in?” This theme of regret and resentment to give up all he has worked for can be followed throughout songs such as “On the Rvn”, “Real in my Veins” and “High” as well.
Overall, Young Thug has raised the bar for himself and those who have followed in his mumble rapping footsteps.
