Journalism I student Elena Webber writes of the memories she shared with and love she had for Clarke Central High School junior Kate Jones, who passed away on Feb. 17.
Aug. 25. It’s a Friday night and the football season has started. I stand next to you. We’re cheering even though we don’t have a clue what’s going on. I leave the game with a hug from you.
Dec. 2. We both go to a friend’s house to watch the Georgia football game. We’re sitting together under a blanket, laughing and talking. The game ends, and I leave with a hug from you.
Dec. 10. You take me to Chick-Fil-A and buy me a milkshake. We sit in the booth for an hour or more talking about random things and laughing. Back in the car we blast music and sing at the top of our lungs. I leave with a hug from you.
Jan. 10. I get a call from you at 12 a.m. You’re the first person to wish me happy birthday. During the day you bring me a Starbucks gift card. Don’t worry, I used it all the day you gave it to me. I leave with a hug and an “I love you” from you.
Feb. 14. It’s Valentine’s Day. At lunch you give me a card shaped into a heart that reads “te quiero,” with your named signed on the back. I leave with a hug from you.
Feb. 17. I can’t count the number of times you randomly sent me texts saying “I love you.” I can’t count the number of times I laughed so hard about something you said or did. I can’t possibly count the number of times I wished I had spent more time with you and showed you how much I care about you.
I am now leaving with an “I love you,” but this time, from me to you.
To you, Kate Jones. My friend.
