The 51st Classic City Championship takes place Sept. 22 at Billy Henderson Stadium. The Clarke Central High school Gladiators continued their 10-year winning streak against the Cedar Shoals High School Jaguars with a final score of 48-7. CCHS varsity football quarterback Jack Mangel is familiar with the historic rivalry between Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals. “I think it’s been about the same since I was a freshman,” Mangel said. “We’ve dominated the series, but I don’t think that changes anything as far as the intensity goes, the hate we have between each other.” Gallery by Zoe Peterson.

The Clarke Central High School varsity football team won the 51st Classic City Championship on Sept. 22, beating the Cedar Shoals High School Jaguars 48-7.
The first half of the game held the majority of the action. The first drive resulted in a touchdown for CCHS within the first 50 seconds of play. Central also intercepted a throw by Cedar before the five-minute mark. No touchdowns or field goals were made by either team during the second half. The scoreboard did not change during the third or fourth quarters.
CCHS head football coach David Perno is proud of how his team performed but feels that his players still have more to improve upon.
“I’m a little bit surprised with the score. I mean, our kids played great, they really did,” Perno said. “We made some serious mistakes but still overcame them and just did a lot of good things. Our defense scored three touchdowns. We just got too many personal fouls and 15-yard penalties. We gotta clean that up, but that’s about it.”
CCHS varsity football quarterback Jack Mangel believes the team played well and is looking ahead to next week’s game against Buford High School.
“It feels good, you know. We can’t get too high though. We have to prepare because we have a big game next week,” Mangel said. “It’s gonna be the biggest game of the year. We gotta get ready for next week and put this behind us. We’ve got Buford next week, but (winning) feels great. I threw a pic, so we gotta clean up that, but other than that we played great and came out with a big win.”
